The next chapter for one of St. Robert's most recognizable properties officially began today.

At 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 30, City crews began the demolition of the former Alpine House, marking another significant step in transforming a long-vacant property into a site ready for future redevelopment.

For many years, the Alpine House has stood as a blighted structure along Historic Route 66. Following years of legal proceedings to bring the property under City ownership, work is now underway to remove the building, clear the site, and prepare the property for future private investment.

Residents driving by over the next several days may notice that the front of the building remains standing. This is intentional.

For safety reasons, demolition is beginning from the rear of the structure and will progress toward the front. By working from the back forward, crews can safely bring the main portion of the building down while minimizing risks to nearby power lines, utilities, neighboring properties, and traffic along Old Route 66.

Because of the size and complexity of the structure, demolition is expected to take approximately one week to complete, after which the site will be cleared and leveled.

"This project is about more than removing an old building," said Mayor James W. Breckinridge. "It's about preparing this property for a new beginning. By investing a minimal amount of City resources and utilizing our own staff and equipment, we're taking an important step toward creating opportunities for future private development and continued investment in St. Robert."

Prior to demolition, the structure was professionally tested for asbestos, and the results confirmed that no asbestos was present, allowing demolition to proceed safely.

While no future development has been announced for the property, preparing the site creates opportunities for private developers and investors to consider the location for future commercial or mixed-use development.

The City appreciates the patience of nearby residents and motorists during the demolition process and looks forward to sharing updates as work continues over the coming days.
